WSU SWE -- Activities |

Adopt-A-Family 2003 |
| |
Each year SWE gives back to the community by adopting a
family for the holiday season. We collect donations of clothes, books,
toys, food, and cash between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Deliveries are
made in person to the family. If you would like to donate to this worthy
cause, please take your donations to the Dean's office, 100 Wallace Hall. |

Lego Mindstorms
2004 |
| |
This activity for 4th-8th graders teaches the value of
science and engineering through learning to program Lego™ robots to
navigate through a course built by WSU engineering organizations. The
theme this year is the Summer Olympics. Organizations are to use this
theme when designing and building their courses. The SWE course will
challenge students to transfer the Olympic rings from one side of the
course to the other while keeping them in the same order. |

Science Olympiad 2004 |
| |
A science competition for area high school students,
Science Olympiad challenges students through several events they must
successfully complete during the competition. Awards are handed out at the
end of the day. SWE traditionally helps Alpha Pi Mu (the industrial
engineering honorary fraternity) with the "Design of Experiments" event.
Students have 50 minutes to sort through a bag of "stuff", design an
experiment around it, and then follow the scientific process step-by-step
to perform the experiment. |

Girl Scout Events |
| |
Each semester SWE takes activities that teach science and
engineering to local Girl Scout troops and spends a few hours with them.
Activities range from polishing pennies to building domes out of gumdrops
and toothpicks. This is a very rewarding activity and is always successful
at teaching the girls that they, too, can become anything they set their
minds to. |
