SEEDS (Science &
Engineering Education Development for Students) is an initiative to
plant enthusiasm for science, math and engineering in young people.
Through a series of outreach activities, elementary, middle and high
school students will discover the fun and excitement hands-on
exploration, problem-solving and creativity.
Some of the projects
planned for the 2003-2004 academic year are coordinating one-on-one
mentoring to students, working with students on afterschool science
and technology projects, scheduling visits to classrooms, and
participating in the Legos Robotics Mindstorm Challenge, Kansas
Science Olympiad, Jason Project and SWE Engineering Expo.
A primary goal of SEEDS
is to make role models available, especially to underrepresented
populations such as girls and minorities, to encourage students to get
interested and stay interested in science.
Another primary goal is
to encourage young people to pursue science and technology, especially
engineering, as a career path. Creating excitement in the field and
supplying educational advice will help meet this purpose.
SEEDS is a project of the College of Engineering at
Wichita State University and funded by the Raytheon Corporation.
