The Road to Success
The WSU Mini-Baja Team
The gears sheared off,
mud nearly destroyed the body, but the WSU Mini-Baja car weathered the elements in
Provo, Utah, to take third place in the Western Regional Competition, the WSU Mini-Baja Team’s
best finish in
history.

Soaring into
Competition
The Design, Build, Fly Team
For four years, WSU students have created and flown
miniature planes as
part of the Design, Build, Fly program, sponsored by Cessna and the Office of Naval
Research. The program prepares students for careers in the aviation industry.
“If you can build a good plane in this
competition,” advisor Dr. L. Scott Miller says, “a full-size plane is a
more familiar challenge.”

2003 Kansas
BEST Competition
Twenty-seven teams will
compete on November 1 in the fifth annual Kansas BEST (Boosting
Engineering, Science and Technology) high school competition, which is
designed to inspire and motivate students toward careers in engineering,
science and technology.
The sports-like technology contest combines the excitement of a
high school football game with the strategy of a chess match and the
intellectual challenge of a science fair. (Reprinted from

WSU Engineering
Open House
2004
It’s not too early to start
planning for the annual College of Engineering Open House, which will be
held
April 23, 2004, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
We will be showcasing student projects, engineering laboratories, and
engineering research being conducted in the College. Engineering
student organizations, such as the
Kansas BEST (Boosting
Engineering Science and Technology)
team and the
Lego Mindstorms team are
scheduled to give demonstrations during Open House.
Between 9:30 a.m. and 10:25 a.m., we’ll be conducting
engineering competitions in which K-12 students may
participate (no advance preparation on their part is necessary). Last year
the competitions included catapult building, foam rocket launches, and an
egg drop.
The awards banquet will be the evening of Saturday, April 24, 2004. If you
are a
K-12 teacher who would like to schedule a guided tour, or a potential sponsor of
a project or award, please contact the College of Engineering Dean's
Office at 316-978-3400.

Faculty Achievements @ WSU
Engineering
A
reception honoring Dr. Mahesh Greywall, Professor of Mechanical
Engineering, was held on May 13, 2003, in the Rhatigan Student Center.
Dr. Greywall retired after thirty-three years of distinguished
service to WSU, the College of Engineering, and the department of
mechanical engineering.
Dr. Greywall
received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering in 1957, his
M.S. in mechanical engineering in 1959 and his Ph.D. in mechanical
engineering in 1962, all from the University of California at
Berkeley. He has taught many courses at WSU, including ME
521, Fluid Mechanics;
ME 701, Boundary Layer Theory ; ME 602, Engineering for the
Environment; and ME 758, Computational Fluid Dynamics and Heat
Transfer.
"In nearly every phase of my academic career over the past twenty
years, Dr. Greywall has been a positive influence and mentor. From my start
as a graduate student to adjunct/lecturer to assistant professor,
there was always something to learn from him. Students who
have had him for class remarked to me that his teaching style is
one that is a good example for other professors to follow. I
think I will try to take their advice."

Kurt Soschinske

Student Achievements @ WSU Engineering
Tejas
Mazmudar, a May 2003 graduate in aerospace engineering at Wichita State
University, was selected as the Sigma Gamma Tau Outstanding Aerospace
Engineering Senior for the region. Six regions comprise the national
aerospace engineering honor society.
Mazmudar is the fourth Wichita State engineering graduate to receive this honor
in the last six years. Previous winners were Brenda Yurko in 1998, Janna
McKenna in 1999, and Andrea Vavra in 2001.
Klaus Hoffmann, aerospace engineering professor, is the Sigma Gamma Tau
adviser at WSU.

Congratulations to Mr. Majid Feiz,
Ph.D. student in mechanical engineering. He is the recipient of 2003 University Turbine Systems
Research (UTSR) Gas Turbine Industrial Fellowship.
The program is offered by the South Carolina Institute for Energy Studies
(SCIES) and funded by the department of Energy’s National Energy Technology
Laboratory. The program offers students valuable work experience and the
opportunity to practice the art of engineering in an industrial setting.
Discipline areas, as applied to land-based gas turbine power generation
systems, include mechanical design and manufacturing, heat transfer,
aerodynamics, combustion, thermodynamic analyses, materials and coatings,
and testing and evaluation. |
